Frequently Asked Questions

Everything we get asked about vanilla beans, our spices, and the way Josie's sources direct from the farm.

  • Sure, we get our products from farms who farm organically because they believe in it and so we do.

  • Each vanilla pod (bean) comes from a single flower. It takes approximately 1,000 hand-pollinated flowers to produce one pound of vanilla beans, which contributes to its high cost.

  • Yes, studies have shown that vanilla offers several health benefits, including support for the liver and heart, and relief for conditions such as gout and arthritis. Vanillin, a compound in vanilla, can also help reduce cholesterol levels.

  • Vanilla beans can be eaten raw in moderation. They can be added to desserts, smoothies, or whipped cream for a natural vanilla flavor.

  • Farmers have only one day to pollinate a vanilla flower before it dies.

  • Pure vanilla extract should list only vanilla beans and alcohol as ingredients. If other substances are included, it is not considered 100% pure vanilla extract.

  • Vanilla extract will last indefinitely when stored properly in your pantry, away from sunlight. Avoid storing it in the fridge or freezer.

  • One teaspoon of vanilla extract contains a very small amount of alcohol, typically around 1%.

  • At Josie's Sweet Caviar, we source our vanilla beans directly from family farms around the world. By eliminating intermediaries, we ensure that our vanilla beans are fresh, juicy, and plump, full of caviar and vanillin. Additionally, our vanilla beans are organic and gluten-free.

  • We offer spices because they also come directly from family farms around the world. Our spices, including pink, black, and white peppercorns, nutmeg, cloves, Ceylon cinnamon sticks, and cardamom, are picked from the tree and shipped straight to us, ensuring the freshest quality.
